Marya Sea Kaminski is a performer and a writer whose heart vacillates between Seattle and Brooklyn.
In the last few months, she’s played Betsy/Lindsay in Clybourne Park at the Seattle Repertory Theatre, as well as the title role Hedda Gabler, The Nurse in Romeo and Juliet and Janet in Dan Savage’s world premiere comedy Miracle! in Intiman’s triumphant reopening season. In June, she premiered her newest original performance Riddled, a one-woman rock musical commissioned by The Richard Hugo House in Seattle, Washington.
This fall, as a recipient of a Seattle City Artist Award she will be writing create a new collection of short stories exploring themes of family and autism, as well as co-teaching a Writing on Location class in Paris, France with Daryle Conners. Additionally, she will spend a week at the Helikos School in Florence, Italy studying clown with master teacher Giovanni Fusetti.
He awards include “Artist of the Year” by Seattle Magazine, as well as “Best Local Stage Actor” and “Best Performing Artist” by the readers of the Seattle Weekly. And in 2010, she was honored with a Genius Award in Theater from The Stranger and the Seattle Gregory Award for Outstanding Actress.
Marya Sea has played the title role in Electra at Seattle Shakespeare (directed by Sheila Daniels), Hedda Gabler in Washington Ensemble Theatre’s original adaptation entitled blahblahblahBANG! at On the Boards; My Name is Rachel Corrie (Seattle Times Footlight Award 2007), The Road to Mecca with Leigh Silverman, and Tina Landau’s The Time of Your Life at the Seattle Repertory Theatre; Moonlight and Magnolias at the Intiman Theatre; Simone Alone at La Mama ETC in New York City; and The Cherry Orchard at Annenberg Center in Philadelphia. Additionally, Marya has played principal roles in the feature films Dichotomy by Funkbuddha Productions and Waxie Moon in the Fallen Jewel with Wes Hurley and I Ate My Eye Productions.
She has created over twenty solo shows and has performed her original work at Bumbershoot and On the Boards in Seattle; PS 122 in New York; the Myrna Loy Center in Helena; and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland. Additionally, her writing has been published in Rivet Magazine, msn.com/Womanity, KNOCK Magazine, Seattle City Arts Magazine and The New York Theatre Review.
A founding member and co-artistic director of the Washington Ensemble Theatre (formerly, WET) from 2004-2008, Marya Sea directed the Northwest premieres of Adam Rapp’s Finer Noble Gases and Jordan Harrison’s The Museum Play, performed as the First Lady in the national premiere of Jane Martin’s Laura’s Bush (Seattle Times Footlight Award, 2004) and as M in Sarah Kane’s Crave, and served as Literary Manager for the development of new and original works including Stephanie Timm’s Crumbs are also Bread and Paul Mullin’s The Ten Thousand Things at WET.
Marya holds a BA in English and Theatre Arts from the University of Pennsylvania and an Acting MFA from the University of Washington. Currently, Marya Sea teaches Acting at Cornish College of the Arts, where she was recently honored with the Drama Department’s Award for Teaching Excellence.
